The sting of Newcastle skipper Matt Thompson’s end of season defection to Melbourne Heart began to feel a little more real in the Hunter last month as the trusty utility dragged the team back from the brink in the A-League.

A string of sterling performances including a pair of fine goals from his own boot while playing a hand numerous others has earned him the Soccer International Harvey Norman Player of the Month.

The 27-year-old has seldom missed a beat all season and his form and leadership is a big reason for the Jets’ golden period leading into the New Year.

Thompson is now in the running to join Fred, Kevin Muscat, Joel Griffiths, Nicky Carle and Craig Moore as winners of the Soccer International Harvey Norman Player of the Year.
